Distinguished since 2017 as a UNESCO Creative City in the field of Media Arts, Braga will be home to a new Media Arts Centre, a space that aligns with the city's cultural scene to bring the community closer to the potential of the link between art and technology. As a result of the renovation of the Cineteatro São Geraldo and the Pé Alado building - the headquarters of the São Lázaro and São João de Souto Parish Council - the intervention will provide Braga with a reference space in the field of Media Arts, promoting the enhancement of the built heritage, strengthening territorial cohesion and the cultural dynamism of the urban centre.

The new Media Arts Centre includes an auditorium with capacity for 800 people (700 standing and 100 seated; or 340 seated), a restaurant/cafeteria with capacity for 80 people, and a blackbox for 500 people. In addition to these, the space will also have other facilities, including offices and various work spaces. Seen as a ‘truly emblematic and impactful investment for Braga’, as stated by the Mayor of Braga, Ricardo Rio, the project will be an element of cultural affirmation for the city and for its national and international projection.

Built in 1917 and converted into a cinema in 1950, the Cineteatro São Geraldo played a central role in Braga's cultural scene for decades. Its use, which included film screenings, theatre shows and social events, was interrupted in 1995, resulting in the loss of a valuable cultural infrastructure. This house is now reborning as a centre of innovation and competitiveness, reinforcing its economic and cultural functions.
